V.F.W. “GOLF WAR” TOURNEY A SUCCESS

(TRINITY, TEXAS) – The 11th Annual Veterans “Golf War” tournament was held again this past Saturday, Oct. 6th at Westwood Shores Country Club in Trinity  and thirteen four-person teams turned out for one of the VFW’s most popular fundraiser events.  Great golf weather prevailed again and funds raised benefit the VFW Scholarship Fund for area youth.  “Salute” to all of the tournament sponsors, door prize donators, players and volunteers for their generous support.

First Place winners were the team of Austin, Chris, and Tracy Kniec and Larry Thompson. Claiming Second Place was the Carrie & Mike Baker and John & Mike Smith team. Third Place Team winners were Don Hurrle, Jason McWilliams, Johnny Wolf and Steve Wright  Picking up the Mystery Team prize was the Ron Auvenshine, Dallas and Harold Don Dixon and Jimmy Hassell  team. Other cash prizes awarded went to Manny Rachel for Longest Drive-Men, Sue See for Longest Drive-Ladies and to Robert Kelley for Closest-to-the-Pin-Men.

Thanks to all the players for their donations and spirited play, as well.  Thanks, too, to the prize winners for their generosity in donating most of the prize money back to the VFW Scholarship and Operating Funds, needy veterans and the many area charities that the VFW contributes to throughout the year.

Once again this year, $10,000 cash was offered by Rusty Baker at Rollo Insurance as a hole-in-one prize on the par 3 #13 Hole.  As happened last year, no one made a hole-in-one but a lot of good shots got close.

A big thanks also goes to VFW Post #6899 members James Eastham, Olin Holt and Ron Linden.  The patriotic trio handled the flagstick on final Hole #18 that was proudly topped by the U. S. stars and stripes flag.

Hole sponsorships were available to area businesses or individuals and included a sponsor sign on one of the tee boxes for each sponsored hole, a listing on the sponsor’s list given to all players, listing on the VFW Post #6899 website at VFW Post #6899 and in the newspaper thank-you ad.

Finally, sincere thanks to The Trinity Standard and The Groveton News for event publicity.
